Thanks Deady, I was a bit lazy when I posted that
Also, for those using the 64 bits version there is an extra step to make the driver run under wine:
Code:
rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/updates/10/i386/xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-8.573-1.9.1.fc10.i386.rpm

[root@deadybook ~] reboot
solves the problem

What would this command be for 64 bit?

It would be almost the same, I did this:
Code:
yum -y install xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs xorg-x11-drv-fglrx akmod-fglrx kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs.i386
You need this i386 package and the package I posted above to make it work under wine. For compiz these are not necessary.

I'm not sure if I got what is going on, but it looks like the problem I had before with PAT, try adding "nopat" to your kernel boot parameters, edit your grub.conf and add nopat, it should look like this:
Code:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.x86_64 ro root=UUID=92a13703-76cd-4c0b-8d53-7661a98000df idle=poll nopat rhgb quiet
then reboot. If it does not help you can look for errors in your logs:
Code:
grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

thanks, but that did not help either. I typed that command and this is all I got :
[root@localhost brandon]# grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
My system will not let me move any windows, can't click or type anything, but when I hit the power button the shutdown dialogue comes up and counts down so its not like a hard lock.
It also doesn't let me restart x with ctrl alt backspace or anything.

Maybe it is not a problem with your driver, there could be something wrong with your window manager, it is hard to tell ... have you tried dmesg to see if there is something else wrong ? If this happens when you try to load compiz you can switch to metacity and reinstall compiz related packages.
By the way, you may create a new user just to see if it is not a problem with your user settings ...

I think I may have fixed it by reinstalling the drivers using the terminal as opposed to the gui. Hasn't done it for a while but of course as soon as I post this it's probably going to freeze lol.
On a different issue is it possible to get vsync working woith compiz and fglrx? I have NEVER been able to successfully get this to work and the tearing is very annoying. I have tried turning on vsync in compizconfig (unchecked detect refreshrate changed it to 60 checked vsyc) and the same in gconf-editor and also tried forcing it in the ati control panel to no avail.
Could never get it working in my desktop with nvidia either. I got it working ONCE a long time ago with beryl and a 7600gs but thats it. It really annoys me that this option still doesn't function.

I believe after the last auto-yum-update, I started getting this problem:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=214999
Ah! It used to work SO WELL, I don't know what happened to it.

I think the problem is the last xorg-X11-server-Xorg and the xorg-X11-server-common packages.
After that update I lost my desktop effects in KDE and the display has some redraw problems . There are other packages installed but the most probable culprit are those.
Think we have to wait for a fix or maybe to downgrade.

...or you could try removing and reinstalling the fglrx packages as suggested above.

Thanks Adrianx. Reinstalling worked for me, but I have a 64 bit system and the instructions are different:
Quote:
rpm -e `rpm -qa|grep fglrx`
yum install xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs xorg-x11-drv-fglrx akmod-fglrx kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs.i386
reboot
|
Thanks again

BUT: the problem now is not acceleration. When I type:
I got
Quote:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.3-devel
|
Any ideas?

@ppesci
Oh no! fglrxinfo still gives me:
Code:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8395 Release
It looks as if the radeon module has not been blacklisted for you. Maybe you should try repeating the steps in post #1.
I didn't have to do that, though. Hope it helps.
