Question Extracting MySQL Files

Hi, everyone.

I just installed Fedora Core 1. Here comes the first of my many dumb questions.

I chose to install MySQL along with Fedora, but upon checking the installation, I found an old version 3 MySQL. I decided to install 4.0.18, so downloaded the file from the MySQL site (mysql-standard-4.0.18-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz).

If I right click on the file in Konqueror (KDE desktop), I get choice of "Extract here" and "Preview in Archive". If I do the same in Nautilus (GNOME), I get "Extract to" (no option of viewing the files).

When I do view the files, it seems obvious that the files should be extracted to nearly 20 locations. It doesn't seem that either "Extract here" or "Extract to" would accomplish this.

I could use the command line, but it seems as if I'd have the same problem.

How do I get the files to go where they need to go?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Wow...perfect! Thank you very much.

I do have one question, though. They're installing to a different location (/usr/local/mysql) than the existing installation (/usr/bin). Actually, the new location makes more sense to me, but would you suggest I go through and delete all the existing mysql files before installing the new version? Or will this cause problems?

Before you go ahead, I would try this one for Fedora first:

Unhappy

Wow! I thought rpm was supposed to simplify things!?

In any case, I'll probably try it this way, if for no other reason than that it will give me good experience with rpm.

Thanks.
