Question New to Linux Fedora. Need your guidance.

Hi all,

I am new to Linux and wish to use Linux too alongside Windows. As I dont have much technical knowledge my questions may look stupid. But please bear with me. I wish to switch to Linux ultimately. First I wish to know is if the Fedora Core 7 is Live CD only or I can install in on my harddrive? I have got the DVD of Fedora Core 7. Second I would like to know as I heard from some friends that some games for Windows can be played on Linux with installing some softwares. What I would like to know is would I be able to play some Windows games on Fedora Linux too after installing the related softwares or this the case with other Linux versions only as I did not find the gaming section in your forums? Kindly let me know. Thanks.

Welcome to Fedora!

Note: No longer call it "Fedora Core", that changed in version 7, so its called "Fedora 7". Prior version still called "Fedora Core x".

Depends on which you downloaded. The DVD is the install one. The CDs could be the Live CD or Rescue CD. The Live CD can let you install.

You may want to look at HowToArticles on this forum to learn more of Fedora.

There is "Wine" which is an emulator to Windows programs in Linux.
Code:
su -
yum install wine

I make it a point, when encountering questionable posts, to check what other stuff that member has posted. Here, in this post, you admit to being new to Linux and not having much technical knowledge. Yet here, in your second post:

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=171072

you wish to port windows games to Linux? Dude, I dont even have that kind of skill. You would need computer languages such as C++ on top of an intimate knowledge of windows AND linux. Yet you know nothing about Linux? It was your last post here:

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...379#post894379

that got me interested. I apologize if I seemed a little sarcastic, it was over a month before I learned what yum was when I started with Fedora and Linux. I sense you are sincere and really wish to learn. But you cant have a 5 minute attention span and it is going to take some time and effort to become even moderately adept at Linux. Please give it the chance, we are here to help you. No question is ever too dumb when you dont know the answer. But also bear in mind you will not become an expert in a week and please dont critique something that you dont have a clue what you are talking about like you did in your third post. If something seems unduely hard or not right then chances are you are missing a piece. Software is actually EASIER to install and keep updated in Linux. I hope in time you will come to understand why. Nice meeting you and I hope we'll be seeing a lot of you round here.

You might want to take a look at my wine basics thread.

JN4: Interesting, I saw the same posts but had a completely different reaction. I thought, somebody new noticed that gnu/linux is a bit light on games and wanted to help. That's nice.

hey, that is a great wine guide! I somehow missed it till you linked it. Not the biggest wine fan myself but I think your guide explained a major problem I had. I may give it another go in the next few days. Thanks.
