I'm thinking a little more info about what kind of laptop, model, year, memory installed, HDD size, HDD type and stuff like that might help someone give you some answers.
However, my first kneejerk reaction says if it's not a matter of an SATA drive, you've got a hardware problem.

Try FC6 - it's far more stable than Fedora 7 and the latter has known issues with laptops (and no, denying the problems clearly marked up in bugzilla won't make them go away)
Oh yeah, specs: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell...-20906166.html

I see. So I need to look this up myself?
I think I'm done here.

Fedora Core 6 is more stable than Fedora 7? I've been running Fedora 7 since the moment it was available, actually been using it since Test 1. No stability issues here. Rock solid on a laptop and 2 desktops. With a little effort and thought most people can solve their Linux issues fairly easily.

well, lets see, if you cant install nothin not even windows xp then I would think it is a hardware problem? Try downloading "the ultimate boot CD" (you can google that and find it) and using one of the three HD nuking programs included to wipe the drive. Then try loading XP. If that cant find the drive you are screwed.

If you can't install Windows or Linux, sounds like a hardware problem to me....
