power manager battery charging problem

A strange thing is happening, and it may be due to having installed a new HDD and larger RAM. The gnome power manager charges the battery up to around say 22%, then suddenly reports 100% charged. It then seems to stop charging. But if I turn off the mains, the power manager immediately reports the lower percentage again. Any ideas how to sort this? e.g. yum remove and reinstall the power manager or something?
Thanks..
Jacek
