Beginner Help

I am trying to install BitTorrent and I have downloaded the file and extracted it to my desktop, but I can't seem to get it to run. Complete newbie to Linux - what do I do?

Well, you could open a Terminal and type:

su

give the root password and type:

yum install bittorrent-gui

Unless you really want to mess around compiling the thing you downloaded

Edit: Oh, welcome to the forum.

Probably a dumb question, but are you trying to install the bittorrent program, or something you've downloaded with the bittorrent?

right click the menu --- edit menus

under the internet category check bittorrent.

now you can get the gui from the menu =]

I'm finding that most of the programs I attempt to install are either already installed (bittorrent) or comes up with a message,

Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
Nothing to do

Hello:
You might find installing and using Yumex helpful [gui front end for yum]

su -

yum -y install yumex

It will be under
Applications / System Tools / Yum Extender

That happens a lot For example, someone thinks he needs to install the Pidgin Messenger but it's already installed but called 'Internet Messenger' in the menus.

something got messed up, now when i login it is very strange, there is no background, when i left click on the screen, around boxes, it comes up with a "twm" menu. The boxes' tops are teal and there's a little "xclock" in the top right, and a "xterm" box. What is going on? do i need to wipe harddive?
