DNS redirect?

Hey all!

What would be the best way to redirect a range of IP's (from DHCP) to a certain web page?

IE. If someone plugs into a switch and gets a dhcpd lease (one thats not defined in my named scheme) and when they try to access the internet, mail/webpage it directs them to a web page saying "contact blah"

I was thinking squid or DNS redirect? Is there an easy way to do this, or what would be the best way to attempt this?

thanks!!

Kasp

Squid would be your best bet, as using DNS, if someone really wanted to get to the blocked sites, they could use IP addresses/external proxies etc.

Squid on the other hand can be setup as a transparent proxy on the gateway (invisible to clients/no client configuration needed), and then DHCP set that as the default gateway for clients, then using Squid filtering to block destination sites/IPs. Provided the gateway is the only route to the Internet, then what Squid says, goes.

I currently use squid like that, I do block sites and have the dhcp setup to go out thru my squid.

Im mor elooking for a "hotel-like network operation" sorta like, when you plug in your PC and try to access the internet, it makes you go to this page about "purcahse internet here" but i'd like mine to say (and i alreayd have the page made up) contact me for internet access. Basically Im trying to eliminate the problem of users plugging in a pc/laptop into an open network jack and grabbing a dhcp and getting on the net. Thought I could supply my dhcpd range (unknown hosts get say 192.168.199.X, where a known host is 192.168.100.X, so I would make all 192.168.199.0/24 auto gho to this web page saying to contact me....

I've not done this myself, but can you setup an access list in Squid, so it requires a username/password to access the net, otherwise re-direct to your page?

Sounds like something Squid would be able to do.
