Hangs on "starting udev"

Hi,

I have a asus L5800C laptop and when I try to install fedora 8 with the live cd (some problems with dvd player, so I have only cd available) it hangs on "starting udev"

I have tried to add many parameters like acpi=off,noacpi,apm=off,... but they didn't worked!

I think the problem is the 2.6.23 kernel, because I have also update fedora 7 to a newer 2.6.23 kernel and it hangs also on the udev issue. (2.6.22 worked fine)

With the live cd there is no problem because on an other pc it worked well !

Can you post the output of "/sbin/lspci"? It could help to narrow down possible causes.

Can you post the output of "/sbin/lspci"? It could help to narrow down possible causes.

I have the same issue on my laptop (googling for it right now)...the only thing that my laptop has that your machine has is a Broadcom BCM wireless lan controller, which is 'turned off' (but can't be disabled, at least in my bios).

on f8 mine was hanging on starting udev, i tried most of the soultions but did not work, and then i decided remove hardware one by one, First one to go was my linksys pci wireless card. bingo the culprit,. i started it back up and everything is normal. i think the niew .23 kernel did not like my card. it happened when i installed the same kernel on f7.

now i want to know how i can get that card to work

If you check out the lspci from the link I posted above, both I and the other guy on the mailing list who are having this problem have broadcom controllers as well. It seems to be a common thread among the affected systems. My laptop also has a broadcom wireless card, but is not affected. So it's not across the board.

Do any of you have systems where you could temporarily remove the wireless card and see if the problem still persists? Unfortunately my desktop has the braodcom adapter hardwired. Another thing to try would be to blacklist the broadcom kernel module b43. I'll give this a try when I have physical access to the machine again and post back here if I have any success.

I too have a laptop that hangs at udev without suitable modification. That also has built in Broadcom wireless.

What gets mine over the hurdle is another subtle variant on the acpi theme that you might like to try.

What distro are you running, if you don't mind me asking? I'm trying to switch from Ubuntu on this machine to Fedora 8...I don't remember why I stopped running F7 on this thing.

I tried your 'pci=noacpi' on my laptop, and it got further in the sense that it was able to dump a kernel panic message. Out of curiosity, I blacklisted the bcm43xx module at boot-time and got the exact same message; none of the other 'common' boot options did that.

BTW, thanks for the link to the bugzilla issue on this, glennzo...I checked a few days ago, but felt I didn't have enough info to report

I've never had any problem with any of the previous versions of Fedora, the only problems I've had are with Fedora 8 which is what I have to use that option for.

I was offering it as an additional option to those listed in post #1. In fact, I have to use:

acpi=off pci=noacpi

to get that one to boot.

Among the oddities of F8, I couldn't get an install to run from the DVD but only from the livecd on that particular machine.

acpi=off should imply pci=noacpi, shouldn't it? Anyway, my system hangs hard with "irq blah nobody cared" messages when I try the noacpi stuff. Using irqpoll/irqfixup, with the above options, it still hangs on Starting udev.

I tried blacklisting b43 with no luck. By the way - in 2.6.22? or .21? (and later) kernel the bcm43xx changed its name to b43. Maybe I have to blacklist some of the other helper modules as well?

Ok, I've got a workaround for this issue that works for me. If anyone else is still having problems you could try this (which I think is a better solution than disabling all acpi support on your system). Basically, we're disabling the b43 kernel driver and helper modules:

In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist add:

blacklist b43
blacklist sbs
blacklist mac80211
blacklist cfg80211

In /etc/modprobe.conf add

alias b43 off
alias sbs off
alias mac80211 off
alias cfg80211 off

After doing this my system boots with the 2.6.23 kernel. I wasn't using b43 anyway, since it doesn't work with my card.
