Question Tab Auto Complete for "yum install ..."?

Hello!

Maybe I'm not doing something right, but I really miss having the tab auto complete feature when installing and removing software using "apt-get install", or in this case, "yum install". Is there something similar for the "yum install" command?

If I'm not being clear enough, the feature I'm talking about will allow you to enter in the first few letters of the program name and hit tab to complete the rest of the name. So, "yum install gstrea[tab]" would automatically complete the line to say "yum install gstreamer-whatever".

Thanks for any help in advance!

tab autocompletion is a feature of the shell and not the application,
the shell will only compete these:

1) commands that are in the local directory or on the path
2) filenames in the current directory

The only way yum would autocomplete this:

yum update firef[tab]
as in the case of "firefox"
would be if you were in the /usr/bin directory where
the firefox file is, then typed in part of "firefox" and hit
the tab.

You can get this functionality by installing bash-completion. Unfortunately, it's very very slow, and can take several seconds to complete or show a list of packages. It might be a little buggy, too -- I tried "rpm -q fi" and it completed to "firstboot" even though firefox is installed.

Thank you very much for the help. It worked like a charm.

I wonder why it's so much slower to show the program lists as compared to apt-get which is instant.

I'll have to go read about the bash-completion program and how to optimize it for yum. Maybe download a list of all available RPMs into a .txt file and then have the bash-completion take a look off that .txt file instead of waiting for yum to give it up.

I'll be sure to report back if I get a better result for it!

Thanks again!
