NetworkManager + local networks

Hi. NetworkManager is a great software if I (You) use wireless networks with access points, but there is a problem with my personal, home networks. I use my laptop in many places where access points are and it works fine.
At home I have two networks: wired (host <-> host) and second wireless (ad-hoc). Both are without any servers or routers so I can't run DHCP, DNS and other services to manage them. In this case NetworkManager is useless because I can't set IP manually.

Is there any software similar to NetworkManager (to easy detect/manage networks) witch I can set IP manually, or better, create a profiles of networks and then simply switch between them with one click?

Thanks.

I use Fedora 8 on my Fujitsu-Siemens Pi1556 laptop with Realtek ethernet card and Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 ABG card (ipw3945 driver)

hi,

i am having the same issue. In F8 i have found the only option is to disable networkmanager and set the interfaces manually or through the network applet in administration. I would have liked to set a fixed ip (sometimes) too but could not. There are other distros where manual configuration Is in fact implemented in NetworkManager but so far I did not find out if this is distro specific customisation. It seems as if there is so much effort being put in the wireless component these days that wired interfaces are somewhat overshadowed.

There is a bug report filed on NM not having static IP. You just have to wait for an Update or remove the existing NM and use the one from FC 7.9. There are quite a few threads regarding the issue and workaround. Since this is fairly new should not be hard find the posts.

Thanks Jimmy for information. I will wait for an Update.

Yesterday I have read goals of NM project and probably functionality of NM will be still too small for Me. Maybe it is time to start thinking about more advanced version of NM in Fedora 9? (NM + some extra configuration options for advanced users?)

Thanks.

(I apologize for grammar ;-)

Hi there again,

does anyone if / when this networkmanger issue might be solved or is even recognized as such if F8? I have looked in buzilla and the forum but could not find an answer.

My work laptop must be able to connect wireless through dhcp and wired with either fixed or dhcp adresses all in different ranges. In bugzilla i read something about ubuntu hacks to make this possible or here to revert to the 7.9NM, are either of those valid options or is an update in the works?

This is one of the final things really bugging my F8 installs and keeping me from making the switch.

thanks,
stefan

Don't know when the update will become available, but you can remove these files and install Fedora 7.90 versions and NetworkManager will work fine.

NetworkManager
NetworkManager-gnome
NetworkManager-glib
krb5-auth-dialog

When doing the removal, use rpm and make sure you use the --nodeps switch as you might inadvertently remove something else, ie:

rpm -e --nodeps NetworkManager

Very disappointing to have this problem with Fedora 8 and its Network Manager.

For those people with an AMD64 trying to revert back to the NetworkManager from Fedora 7, there are six packages from the F8 install that need to be removed and replaced with the F7 version, as there are both an i386 and x86_64 version of some files. Here's what I used :

Delete :
krb5-auth-dialog-0.7-5.fc8.x86_64.rpm
NetworkManager-0.7.0-0.6.6.svn3109.fc8.i386.rpm
NetworkManager-0.7.0-0.6.6.svn3109.fc8.x86_64.rpm
NetworkManager-glib-0.7.0-0.6.6.svn3109.fc8.i386.rpm
NetworkManager-glib-0.7.0-0.6.6.svn3109.fc8.x86_64.rpm
NetworkManager-gnome-0.7.0-0.6.6.svn3109.fc8.x86_64.rpm

I had to use an additional rpm switch to make this happen - eg :

rpm -e --allmatches --nodeps NetworkManager

Add :

krb5-auth-dialog-0.7-2.x86_64.rpm
NetworkManager-0.6.5-7.fc7.i386.rpm
NetworkManager-0.6.5-7.fc7.x86_64.rpm
NetworkManager-glib-0.6.5-7.fc7.i386.rpm
NetworkManager-glib-0.6.5-7.fc7.x86_64.rpm
NetworkManager-gnome-0.6.5-7.fc7.x86_64.rpm

Works a charm now ! I really could not live without static IP addresses - my reliable and trusty backup system needs to be able to find each box at a fixed IP address and match its ssh key.

Tony
