Unable to bring up network interface on LAN

I've got a Fedora 7 machine that I'm trying to integrate into a Windows workgroup; it will eventually be an e-mail server. Right now, however, every time I boot, eth0 lists as okay, but I have no interface in Network Device Control, nor any access to network or internet.

In a previous installation attempt, I tried to use dhcp, but the simply failed while attempting to determine IP address, and the end result was the same: no devices listed in the Device Control.

The windows machines on the network do not require any special authentication; I can install XP on any machine connected to the network, name it whatever I want, and as long as I give it the right workgroup, everything works out.

By Network Device Control do you mean system-config-network ?? If not, try that from the command line.

That's the one. There's nothing there. However, in system-config-services, the network service lists:

Configured devices:
lo eth0
Currently active devices:
lo eth0

More information:

dmesg | grep eth results:
eth0 link up, 100 mbps, full duplex
