ASUS Z71 Dim Screen Issues

Let me start off by letting you all know I am VERY new to Linux, never used it before and wanted to give it a try so I can learn, etc.

If this is the wrong forum for this please let me know, and be gentle.

I just installed Fedora 8, instillation went fine and all that, however once Im am in the GUI my screen goe sVERY dark, almost unreadable. My brightness Fn keys on the keyboard will not work for me and the power settings also do no affect the brightness in any way.

I found this site:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=298350

That addresses the same issues I am having, however the language is over my head at this point.

I downloaded and unzipped the file from the 2nd to last post onto my Desktop (Im still having issues just navigating the file system) I then attempted (as root) to run the makepkg command within the folder as directed by the site. However I get a "makepkg: command not found" leaving me completely lost and not really knowing where to go from there.

The screen is currently set to Auto Lite Detection, meaning its almost to dark for me to even see the screen, so its been difficult, and very eye straining to attempt to do more reasearch on this matter.

Any help you guys can give me, as in hopefully a step-by-step of what to do/type would be great so that I can start actually learning how to use this system.

Thanks,

Surrexi

Shameless Top as I still need help.

Hey. I have been having the exact same problems. First, that link you provided worked like a charm. It's not that hard. Here's what you do. Go to the terminal and su to root. Then type in the following:

echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/ls_switch

That made my screen wonderfully bright. You'll have to do that every time you boot up. I haven't tried their code to make it work on every boot yet, but I imagine it will work.
