Fedora Core 8 hangs at "Starting udev" after install
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,3)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/sda4
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,3)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora Core 8 (2.6.21-2950.fc8xen)root (hd0,3) kernel /xen.gz-2.6.21-2950.fc8 module /vmlinuz-2.6.21-2950.fc8xen ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet module /initrd-2.6.21-2950.fc8xen.img title Fedora Core 8-base (2.6.23.1-42.fc8)root (hd0,3) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.23.1-42.fc8 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.23.1-42.fc8.img
This is content of grub.conf on my machine.
1. The "Fedora Core 8-base" boots well
2. But "Fedora Core 8 (2.6.21-2950.fc8xen)" hangs at "Start udev"
Could anyone know how to fix it. Please help me
Thanks,
Thuc

I wonder if the boot sequence has gotten far enough at this point so that you could switch to a virtual terminal, CTRL/ALT/F1 (F2,F3,F4,F5,F6), to see if there are any useful error messages?

Same thing
Same thing here.
F8 works fabulously on my desktop machine...but the boot fails on my laptop at the 'starting udev' line (hangs, no drive activity).
Tried noapic, acpi=off boot parms, no change. Not far enough in the process to do anything else. Turned quiet boot & rhgb off, nothing obviously 'strange' noted. F7 & Ubuntu works fine on same laptop...but I'd really prefer using F8.
Just chiming in with another example.
HP ZV5000 laptop
AMD64 3200, 1GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce 4MX 440 vid card.

I found my problem , i decided remove hardware one by one, First one to go was my linksys pci wireless card. bingo the culprit,. i started it back up and everything is normal. i think the niew .23 kernel did not like my card. it happened when i installed the same kernel on f7.
do you guyas have a pci wirelss card possibly with broadcom chipset
now i want to know how i can get that card to work
Thanks

I too have a laptop that hangs at udev without modification. It's an HP Compaq nx6125 with built in Broadcom wireless. The modifications to the boot parameters that get it over the hurdle are:
acpi=off pci=noacpi
Of course, with those parameters it's back to the old behavior of not powering down at shut off.
Hope that helps someone.

With me the problem comes from "xend" component. I don't know what it used for, but when i reinstall F8 without this component the problem does not happen again.
Does anyone know what "xend" used for? Please help me
Thanks for your help anyway!

Try the solution at the bottom of this thread:
http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=171295
xend is the xen daemon, used in support of the xen virtualization kernel (kernel-xen). If you don't want to use xen, you should remove kernel-xen and boot from the regular kernel. Xen is really cool, but adds some additional headaches (especially if you want to use an nvidia driver).
