When using mplayer which video output driver you using?
Have you tried others?

in the conf file, i have xv, x11

altho, NO media player works, vlc, kaffeine, mplayer, etc... when click "properties" i can see the video as a preview... a standard install of mplayer and vlc under FC7 worked, I didn't have to change/edit anything, they just played.... is this an ati driver issue? or am I missing something?

There are other video output choices to choose depending on the video module X is using. Read the manpages to see the options for -vo. ' man mplayer '. Now just to make it is using the video output driver choice define it on the command line ' mplayer -vo xv name_of_media_file
