F8 System/Preferences/Look And Feel

Hi All

I've installed F8 from the Linux Magazine #86 cover disk and in playing around with Desktop Effects have messed up the System/Preferences/Look and Feel sub menu.

The Look and Feel menu now contains Appearance; Desktop Effects; GL Desktop; GL Desktop; Main Menu; Screen Saver and Windows choices in that sequence.

Desktop Effects has no ikon and when selected gives the following Error "Could not launch menu item. Failed to execute child process "desktop effects" (no such file or directory)"

When invoking either GL Desktop entry subsequent application windows are unframed, can't be sized and can only be closed by exiting the program or Ctrl_Alt_Backspace.

Any help in sorting this out would be much appreciated.

John

same here. i think compiz got messed up when i upgraded to fc8 but havent had a chance to sort it out yet.

i think if you look at:

http://www.howtoforge.com/compiz-fus...eforce-fx-5200

and make sure you have all the compiz packages it mentions installed then your "Desktop effects" menu entry should be back and working. I'm going to have a go at it when ive got some time

try:
Code:
su
yum erase *compiz*
rm -rf /home/*/.compiz
yum install compiz
just reinstalling it may do the trick for you. Good luck

Funnily enough I was following the geforce-fx-5200 howto (I've got the exact same card) without problems until I got stuck trying to l locate package ccsm and tried some "clever" command line stuff that sent everything haywire.

I've now reinstalled F8 successfully but still can't find cssm.

As you can see from my reply to saibaggins I'm wary of the command line so I'll pass on that but thanks anyway for the input.

You might just want to try creating a new user account and see if it works correctly. Sounds like settings for that user account got corrupted. If a new user account behaves the same...reinstall.

Never thought of that approach. Thanks for the tip.

Anyway everything works now after my reinstall except I haven't yet been able to find a download source for package ccsn.

Do not be wary of the command line my friend, it is the most powerful tool you have

That was my typo.

I got cssm from the updates repo as you suggested - many thanks - and installed it.

The "howto-compiz-fusion..." on the blog.kagesenshi.org site was helpful.

Now off to find a cheat sheet for all the Compiz Manager settings.
