[MAYBE SOLVED] segfault 2.6.23 Kernel FC8 (Unusable)

Hi,

I am getting regualr app crahses due to segfaults.

I have insalled the latest FC8 with kernel stated above on a Dell Vostro 200 (SATA controller is an Intel ICH9) . I had to switch the SATA options in the BIOS to RAID mode as opposed to IDE. This allowed me to use the AHCI driver rather that the pix... (I think this is then name of it) I have tried pasing irqpoll with acpi=off to the kernel at boot time. This makes no difference, in fact it may be making things worse for me. Many of my apps are segfault-ing, eclipse, gdm, cisco vpn client, httpd, cupsd, procmail, gftp...etc..

I've had trouble with this from the start, that I thought had been solvd (see: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/...d.php?t=174621) . With the pix.. driver I got kernel panics, with the AHCI I just get apps segfaulting.

I noticed another similar issue, at http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/sho...d.php?t=174130 - this user seemed to think it the app that was casuing it. But with so many of my apps crashing, I think it is the kernel?

in general the dmesg looks like:
app[nnnn]: segfault at xxxxxxx eip xxxxxx esp xxxxxx error 6

I'm staring to think I should rebuild the box with another kernel, I saw a hint somwhere that 2.6.22 may not have this issue.

Any help greatly appreciated

Alan

Hello:
If you have not already done so, you should do a search through https://bugzilla.redhat.com/
if nothing turns up, then you might consider filing a new bug report.

There is probably no need to rebuild your current installation as you should be able to find, with a little searching a 2.6.22 kernel, kernel-devel & kernel-headers packages here.

Hi Seve,

I've found a similar bug in bugzilla and added my experience to it (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=411691)

Thanks for the advice about the rebuild, I wasn't sure if I would get away with doing this. I'll give it a try, I've been 4 days at this box now!!

Hi,
I have got the box working, whether the problem is gone or not I do not know. See
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=411691)
