Linux Newbie having problems with XServer

I would appreciate it if someone could guide me as to what to be checking next. Let me elaborate. I have a desktop PC running Fedora 8 standard install but fully updated and a laptop running Windows XP. Putty works fine to get me a remote text connection. TightVnc works fine to get me a GUI connection to the primary display. Xming and Xlaunch give me a window on my XP machine that is solid grey noise with a black X mouse and then goes away or times out no error messages.

What steps should I take on which PC's to get a Window on my laptop which is a GUI control for my desktop Fedora machine. I thought Xming was the magic bullet, but no joy.

Okay I've played with Xming and X-Win32. I can get a terminal window into my linux box to open on my Windows PC with Xming and with X-Win32. Can;t get the GUI to start or open.

startx produces the following error message:
[Bob@Comp100Fedora X11play]$ startx
hostname: Unknown host
xauth: creating new authority file /home/Bob/.serverauth.5275

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

I'll keep reading and playing but if someone recognizes this as a noob mistake please help.

FreeNX is a better alternative to remote X connections, IMO. It is very easy to set up and is blazing fast:

You are right about NX being easy to install and setup. Now about speed I didn't get the feel that it was any faster than tightvnc. And it does not have a portable version like Xming. Really hoping I can figure out Xming's problem with launching a gnome window on my PC box.

Thanks for the NX idea just the same.

COntinued Issues with Startkde and Xming

I encountered the following errors once Xming on an XP Box was connected to my FC8 server. Any ideas. It also looks like it keeps opening windows in some recursive loop.
