Multiple apache servers off one IP for multiple domains.

Currently, I have one box that hosts 5 websites. I would like to split it up to other spare boxes that I have laying around.

I want to have the one box, with the static IP address, accept the incoming HTTP request... then redirect the user to another box on the network that hosts the files for the website that they requested.

I figured I could just change the Document Root for the various domains to point to a network share hosted on the remote box, but I'm not sure if its that simple. I suppose the problem also comes in when one of the shares will be based on windows xp due to an ASP.Net requirement. I can see the linux box fine from my windows box, courtesy of samba... but I can't see my windows box from my linux box... any suggestions?

name-based virtualhosts to be exact.

Your going to need bind9 for this.

Hi,
assume you have 2 websites in main-box, and 3 websites in second-box at internal network, and all web request will be accepted by main box

to do this, you need
1. define standard http port for main-box and (said) 8080 for second box.
2. configure iptables to enable port-forwarding at your main box to forward request of port 8080 to second-box
3. all websites are virtual hosted at main-box. create redirecting pages to port 8080 for 3 websites those hosted at second-box.
4. the second-box does virtual hosts only 3 websites and listen to port 8080

but forwarding to non standard port seems like inconvenience for any users. beside that you can create a web proxy to access internal network instead of port-forwarding.

just an idea. i never try this.
