Question Pulse Audio and Network Manager by default is STUPID ?

Do you think that enabling Network Manager and Pulse Audio by default is a stupid thing to do? Let's not forget that the whole system is build on top of these which makes uninstalling them impossible (STUPID).

I have two problems with them:
- Network Manager doesn't recognizes my pppoe internet connection and shuts it off !!! so no net with NM on !
- Pulse Audio recognizes my Realtek ALC888 sound card as an INTEL sound card making the the audio function switches behaving incorrectly !!! And no way (that I could find) to force it to recognize the right card.

So what is your opinion? Do you have problems with either one of these two? Was it a good idea FORCING these programs to the public?

Oh, I've tried uninstalling Network Manager, it came of together with pidgin, the messaging program. Pulse Audio is impossible to uninstall without taking out half of my KDE installation, which I NEED !

There's no point ranting here, the developers don't monitor these forums and there's nothing much we users can do. Your choices right now seem to be try and fix it and file bug reports, put up with it, or <gasp> try a distro that works better with your hardware.

You obviously know by now that Fedora is a test-bed for new technologies, so they're only following their strategy by including pulseaudio.

Too bad they don't monitor these forums. I mean this is were peoples are coming for help.
Please direct me were to file bug reports.
I am Fedora since Fedora Core 1. This is the biggest problem I had so far! The worst thing is that to fix it requires rebuilding some rpms, but then I can say goodbye to updates.

Why? There's no connection between this forum and the Fedora project, except that it's our distro of choice

I had issues with PulseAudio, it was working fine, then on re-install was broke, I found that a 'yum remove alsa-plugins-pulseaudio' did the job.

My soundcard, also a Realtek was also listed as an Intel, no need to change that, just remove the pulseaudio plugin for alsa.

As for network manager, I don't use it, so can't really comment.

wayne, the site name is fedoraforum.org !!! if it was windowsforum.org what did you expect to find here? the name relates to it's porpoise, official or unofficial.

I'm not trying to rant here, but I just thought to find out if I'm the only one who has problems with these two programs.

Right, but it's a privately run forum, created by a generous user as a service to other Fedora users, not as a feedback medium to the developers.

As for the porpoises, they're probably all happily swimming around

My answer is yes, I had no probems so far, but I don't know if I can call the workaround I use problems or not... So I like the idea of those two, certainly the PulseAudio works really good and I already used some of its 'additional values' and now that swfdec works with it as well I am in heaven. As for nm, I am really thrilled how flawlessly it works with wifi, since F8, which has at last a fuctinal driver for by BCM stuff, I can really easily connect to home wifi network which is really cool. What I miss about that is that it always somehow forgets what network I was using and tries to connect to first one it finds that has no apparent restrictions (like WEP key), so I always have to set it manually...

Another thing I don't like about it is that it does not work well with the old network stuff which I need at dorm (since I need to autentificate to the site using xsupplicant I need to call ifconfig, xsupplicant and dhclient separately) and I have to turn nm down before that... Well, it is certainly not a showstopper for me, I just added to my 'conect' script one line saying nm to stop This way it works great for both my home setup via nm/wifi and dorm setup via manual/wired... Hehe, I wish I could somehow integrate the script to nm, so that I could let it do it instead of me...

No need to uninstall. To disable nm you only need to go to System->Administration->Services turn it of and reenable the old network stack.

As for pulseaudio, I believe it should be found somewhere in the start/init scripts, so you should be able to turn it of. Or you can remove the alsa plugin for it, then, I believe, you'll be using alsa directly instead of through pa.

i got no issues with both pulse or NetworkManager, they both need to be worked on by users so the developer(s) of the 2 can get feedback to make it better

Why is there no "I have had issues with one or both, but am still glad they were used" option? I haven't had any major issues to speak of, in fact I have been pleased with both PA and NM in Fedora 8, but the point remains that whether they work perfectly 100% of the time or not, it was still a good choice to include them. If you don't like them, use the DVD install. I don't think either are enabled by default. Or, as has been mentioned, both are fairly easy to turn off.
