F7, KDE, gstreamer-ugly, xine won't play mp3s

Maybe i'm crazy, but there seems to be something amiss here.

I have done 2 installs of FC7 recent and I'm unable to get amarok to play mp3s. This is rather recent and has never happened to me in fedora.

Amarok is installed, system has been fully updated. All the gstreamers (good, bad, ugly) are installed, xine is installed. kdemultimedia, extras and extras-nonfree are all installed as well. And still Amarok will not play mp3s and gives me an error concerning the xine engine.

Any ideas?

See: http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mplayer-fedora.html, Sect. 3 (codecs link) and 3.2. I'm pretty sure Xine needs the same codecs. Not sure why you would not have seen this problem before, though....

According to that link for Amarok:

Amarok Engine: Amarok requires you to select an "engine" which can play different media. The current support engines are Xine/Gstreamer and RealPlayer/HelixPlayer. If you installed the gstreamer-plugins-ugly or amarok-extras-nonfree the Xine engine will be default. (Recommended)

I have all that installed. No difference. Same with Mplayer and mplayer's codecs. The essential codec files are residing in all possible directories they could be pulled from.

Hello:

I have to ask: where have you gotten all the multimedia apps/packages from? If they all came from Fedora plus only one other 3rd-party repository, OK. If you have mixed multimedia apps/packages from several 3rd-party repos, then that could be a problem....

I recently un-installed amarok for a similar reason, since I never used it anyway. VLC is my player of choice for mp3s. Haven't checked Xine yet.

Hello:

I just noticed some broken links on my box: Helix Player is no longer in /usr/local/, it's in the usual /usr/lib/. Maybe some broken/incorrect links for you as well?

I've ensured it's not broken links by doing straight copies of the files

Edit: i've also noticed a majority of my avi's that once played in F7 no longer play. None of my wmvs will and vlc will not open.

@localhost ~]$ vlc
vlc: error while loading shared libraries: libdvbpsi.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Mind you i did this last night and figured i did something stupid, so i did a clean install today and back to the same issue. I've done easily over 10-15 installs of F7 and had everything working each of those times in under a 2 hours. I can't for the life of me wrap my head around this.

vlc doesn't give that error in the command line anymore , but it still won't open.

and locate libdvbpsi.so.4 produces zero results for me

Hello:

"locate" won't produce results until the database is updated (usually a daily cron job, or you can waste some time by running updatedb). "rpm -V[v] libdvbpsi" will verify package integrity. Hard-copying instead of linking may also cause problems because of other needed libraries/files not being found in current directory/PATH. Maybe try verifying all relevant multimedia packages? Or, just do a blanket verify of everything (best to run this as root): rpm -Va. Look for missing stuff, altered links/config files that don't make sense, etc. I doubt another re-install would help. I'm stumped.

EDIT: Do you have package lame installed? Also, on my F7 box it looks like Helix Player has no mp3 library, but RealPlayer does....not sure if all these packages' contents changed recently or what.
