Fedora 8 Xfce Spin

Hello,

As promised earlier, Xfce spin of Fedora 8 is now available. Please seed the torrent files at

http://spins.fedoraproject.org

If you like this concept of a Xfce spin, Digg It:

http://digg.com/linux_unix/Announcin...ra_8_Xfce_Spin

Any feedback is most welcome too.

Depending upon your client, you can always try encrypting so that they can't tell it's a torrent. How effective this is, I don't know. I did it once (I use rtorrent) when downloading some Fedora torrent or another and it seemed to help, however, it might have been coincidence.

Already d/l'ed both, uploaded 300+MB, so I guess I'm doing okay.
Torrent client was already set-up for encrypted transfers. They'll likely know just from the sheer amount of time I'm keeping it up.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Xfce is already an excellent window manager and if Fedora rush KDE4 into the firing line in the unfinished state it is now then it will be a very viable alternative.

There are a couple of things that may be worth considering though, one concerns all the Fedora implementations that I have tried and one that appears to only affect the new live cd spin.

Firstly, it would be nice if the Gnome Keyring that works to hold wireless networking encryption keys could be included in the desktop as it is for KDE.

Second, there appears to be no way to stop the live cd Xfce blanking the screen after a set period of time even after full install. Note here that I've added the usual Options lines to the server flags section in xorg.conf and commented out the 'Option "dpms"' which usually are the culprit. These together with judicious adjusting of power management options and screensavers are usually enough on KDE and Gnome and seem to reflect through to Xfce on my other machines. But these two latter options appear to be missing from the livecd.

@bbfuller:
just out of curiosity, do you have more than one screensaver program on that install? Or even more than one frontend for the same backend?
[ e.g - gnome-screensaver and xscreensaver? ]
As to the Gnome-keyring thingy, wouldn't you need a lot of Gnome libraries and their dependencies?
Don't know for sure. Perhaps 'Rahul the Great' can answer that one.

Hello:

This is such a great idea, I wish it had been available before. I had been trying to find a way to trim down the install size for my oldest "beater box"/router, which has limited resources and isn't worth investing with new hardware. I spent a lot of time adding XFCE after the initial install, then removing the other desktops - not as easy/simple as it sounds. This XFCE Spin will definitely be going onto that machine next chance I get to do the upgrade.

Regards,
Vince

Hello b_martinez

Yes, I suppose it would need more libraries to include Gnome keyring in the Xfce live CD, but it works in the KDE live and still has room to fit on a CD so I just wondered if it were a possibility.

As to the screen blanking, there don't seem to be any screensavers on the live cd of Xfce. Certainly no frontend for configuring them that I can see. I agree, that's usually one of the fixes on other installs.

I downloaded it last night and it's seeding on my home desktop right now . I only tried it briefly in QEMU so far, so correct me if I'm wrong, but is there no graphical BitTorrent client included? Perhaps Transmission or similar could be included in a future build . I just think that would round it out to be a fully functional desktop from the very start (so, say, dialup users could survive without downloading any additional packages post-install). I also second the vote for the inclusion of some kind of keyring (as a primarily GNOME user, gnome-keyring would be nice ).

Hello Rahul.
Just a quick note to say "Thank You" for the XFCE spin. It's a nice variation on the F8 base, but....
all my copies disappeared when the grandchildren and their cousins saw it,[ ]so I'll just stick with the standard F8 on all my computers.
Perhaps your work will help to convince my children to really learn GNU/Linux, if only to help their children.
Bill
p.s. It worked well, and I really enjoyed the short time I used it.
