Let's wait on that screen for a while and see what happens. I mean, wait for like 30-40 minutes.

Ok, it might be an X issue. What video card do you have? Did you recently update your kernel? If so, can you try one of your older kernels?

Oh, I just saw the line with usb error. Do you have a memory stick plugged in? Try taking off all your USB stuff and see if it boots.

Ok, let's boot up in runlevel 3 and check your X.org output. If there's a problem remove your video card driver.
Sorry, I have to leave now. If you don't know how to do this you may need to wait until tonight. Or maybe someone else will help.

Wait on the black screen for a good 20 minutes or so. Once you think you've waited long enought hit "ctrl + alt + F1" after about a second a prompt *should* appear and ask you to do a text login. See if you can get this far. This will be a good step to figuring out the problem.

maged to start up in run time level 3 and it let me log in. How do I check X.org output? What is the likely issue as it will boot in text mode?

It's probably an X problem. Do you have specific drivers installed for your video card, or are you using the generic vesa driver? Have you changed some video settings lately? You could try
Code:
$ su -
# mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bkp
That way, I think X will generate a default configuration, which may give you working graphics.

Always used the generic driver. For some reason I did have some display settings up the other day and accidentally changed them but immediately changed it back. Thinking about it this may have been the last time I had it on. Hmmm. Tried typing in the above and no change when I booted up again
Just to let you guys know I really appreciate your help.

Post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. This may give someone an idea of what is causing your problem.
