Intel 965GM X boundary issues in Fedora 8

Hi everybody, long time reader, first time poster. This one has me pretty stumped

I have just purchased a Toshiba Satellite U300-FA3 (Canadian Exclusive)

This laptop uses the Intel 965GM chipset.
I am using Fedora 8 32-bit
I am using kernel 2.6.24.3-12.fc8
I am using xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-42.fc8
I am using the "intel" display module
I have installed all available updates via YUM

I have been having issues with X defining its boundries (for maximizing windows, setting the gnome-panel position, etc.) The boundaries seem set to 1024x768 instead of my resolution, 1280x800

Wasn't the Intel linux driver the one that could only use resolutions that were defined in the BIOS?
Last time I looked into it there was some experimental driver from intel to work around the issue, and there was a free tool to list and redefine BIOS resolutions. Perhaps the intel solution was to integrate the ability to redefine bios resolutions? I know that using the tool did not succeed for me when trying to redefine BIOS modes on Dell Optiplex systems so they could handle wide screen displays.

This was 1-2 years ago, so I would have expected the problem to go away. Your issue could be something different.

Anyway, I would expect a laptop bios to support the built-in screen's resolution.

You may want to look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log

You are supposed to use the 915 resolution package with i9xx cards - especially if you have the older xorg. The reason is that the bios does not always handle modes for HD screens ... guess which OS has rules about HD screens.

Anyway, recent xorgs are supposed to handle this. The puzzle is that the resolution is available at all... it is the windows that are acting as though the resolution is lower, not the screen.
