Cannot access Windows shares by their computer name

Hi all,

when installed Fedora 7 with KDE, I accessed Windows shares on LAN by pointing Konqueror to smb://computer-name/share-name

But after upgraded to Fedora 8 I could not do so, I must replace computer-name with its IP address to access WIndows' shares: smb://192.168.1.xxx/share-name.

I don't understand and how to fix it?

I also want to ask how to remove Network manager applet appears on system tray :-s

Thanks.

Hello

If you use DNS then check the settings in /etc/resolv.conf

If you use local host file check /etc/hosts

these are their contents:

/etc/resolv.conf
Quote:

nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
nameserver 192.168.1.1
/etc/hosts
Quote:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
what's next???

So it looks like your are using a DNS server.

Try:

nslookup computer-name

Does it resolves correctly?
