OK. FWIW, my F9 KDE-LiveCD OS has been screwed up big time since shortly after install, and is still unrecoverable. It's effectively an Enlightenment/E17 DE install. Turned out to be the 'nouveau' video driver doing something that KDE[4] can't handle, but E17 and the other DEs are apparently immune.
You can look around the forums here, as we've discussed KDE4 at length. I just installed those KDE4 updates-testing packages myself a little while ago on a second F9 partition/install, and it looks OK. They may fix some problems, including yours.
V
P.S. That's /var/log/kdm.log, but it will be empty if KDM isn't the default DM, which it's not if GNOME is installed.

fc9 no screen issue
installed latest fc9 on a hp compaq desktop (fairly new machine obtained from workplace). X would not start. i installed 2 packages from Livna site, nvidia-settings-1.0-2.lvn9.i386.rpm and nvidia-xconfig-1.0-1.lvn9.i386.rpm, but when i try to startx i get a "no screen" error. the video card in this box has dual monitor out by way of a dvi port.
any suggestions?
thanks.

Have you tried installing the akmod? See post #14 in this thread. With the Livna repository already included, you should be able to run just this command to pick up the rest of the dependencies:
yum install akmod-nvidia

Yes, but did you install the driver packages?
Also, please re-read Post #3, Q&A10:
Quote:
Q10: How do I use the nvidia-settings utility to adjust/tweak/play with my nvidia driver settings?
A10: Don't, unless you absolutely, positively have no other choice. If you simply cannot resist the urge and must find out what secrets to super-over-clocking your GPU to techno-magically turn it into an eye-popping video-graphical fireball are hidden in that little app (hint: there aren't any), then don't close it with the "Quit" button because that will cause xorg.conf to be re-written, possibly (probably) with changes you didn't want. Instead, close it with the Window Title Bar "X" close button.

Would help to know your hardware specs. BobK1 has pointed out one important step in getting driver packs. Please review the other FAQs and follow steps there to install and set up driver.

EDIT:
@BobK1: Looks like you got your problems sorted out? Glad to see that....

I have the livna nvidia drivers installed for F9. I followed these instructions, and they work great!
Both login screen and gnome are the correct resolution (1280x800), but I'm a KDE fan.
KDE starts in 1280x800, then after a minute, the KDE environment restarts, and comes up in 800x600 mode. Wierd. Gnome is fine, it stays in high res. X is X, shouldn't matter which desktop, but it does for some reason.
This one has me baffled. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I just recently discovered that:
> Video driver 'nouveau' produces this effect, KDE4 only; not a factor in your case, but...
> xorg.conf option "Backingstore" "on" (or: "true" or: "0") produces same lock-ups/crashes, KDE4 only.
Strange things are going on with respect to KDE4 versus X11/Xorg - and the fact that both are still "pre-release" and in flux doesn't help at all. If you want to pursue this issue, I would once again suggest:
> Update to latest available KDE4 packages; consider packages in updates-testing also.
> Review xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log against above info; attach copies to a post if you don't understand.

i'm following these steps:
rpm -Uhv http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-9.rpm
yum --enablerepo=livna-testing install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs akmod-nvidia
akmods --kernels `uname -r`
nvidia-config-display enable
service nvidia restart
when i run akmods --kernels `uname -r` i get a error
"could not find files needed to compile modules for 2.6.25-14.fc9.i686"
rpm -qa |grep kernel-devel
kernel-devel-2.6.25.11-97.fc9.i686
what exactly is this system missing?

That happened to me.
You just installed some stuff....... wait for the system to apply all updates (in gnome, you will get a pop-up saying updates are available.... install them now), or force them yourself with yum update.
Afterwards, try the above command again, and it will work.

Just going from what I remember. Try running 'yum update' then reboot. That worked for me.

Aha! You are running the oldest kernel, the one that comes with F9 ISOs: 2.6.25-14. But when you installed the kernel-devel package, yum naturally grabbed the newest one: 2.6.25.11-97 (and yes, 2.6.25.11 > 2.6.25[.0] and 97 > 14). You must have the kernel-devel package that exactly matches the base kernel in order to build kmods against it. YUM probably also installed kernel-2.6.25.11-97. Try:
rpm -q kernel
Make sure that kernel-2.6.25.11-97.fc9.i686 is installed. If not:
yum update kernel
You can build the kmod before re-booting to the new kernel, instead of using variables, tell it explicitely which kmod to build:
akmods --kernels 2.6.25.11-97.fc9
Then re-boot the PC. After the BIOS posts, but before GRUB actually boots the PC, make sure in that blue-ish GRUB screen that kernel-2.6.25.11-97 is selected as the kernel to load and boot into. If necessary, stop GRUB by pressing any key, and use the arrow keys to select the correct kernel to load and boot.

Hlingler,
i thought that was the issue. my rustyness on nix is showing.
did the changes, X started with 8bit depth, made changes via gui, all is good now. btw, its a system just for vmware, no heavy graphics going on, etc.
thanks.

Many thanks for posting this valuable information.
I was stuck on "unless you downgrade the whole X11 Window System. See the 'How-To' elsewhere in this forum."
I had a hard time locating the referenced How-To for downgrading X.
So in case anyone else is having trouble with that, here's where I found something:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...5&page=1&pp=15
(And by the way -- that page says in big red letters the procedure is "no longer needed" --
but it *is* still needed for older cards such as GeForce4.

I was wondering if a or even lynx would be helpful if your xorg file is messed. I mean it won't help with xorg.conf but at least you can search the web and find help with a problem when x is down. Personally I use the proprietary nvidia driver even though it is not recommended. Just found it easier. My boot time is very fast, stops at loading udev and flashes the nvidia splash and bang at a login prompt. BTW using fedora 8.

How would I go about doing this,
HTML Code:
su - rpm -Uhv http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-9.rpm
yum --enablerepo=livna-testing install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs akmod-nvidia
akmods --kernels `uname -r`
nvidia-config-display enable service nvidia restart
without an internet connection. I have both the "livna-release-9.rpm" and "akmod-nvidia-173.14.12-2.lvn9 RPM for x86_64" on the hard drive, and have installed livna-release-9.rpm, but when I enter in this code,
HTML Code:
yum --enablerepo=livna-testing install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs akmod-nvidia
I cannot get online so how would I go about installing the driver?
Thanks for any advice.
