Besides typing %rb in the status you also have to enable the plugin, go to tools, plugins. Scroll down to Pidgin-Rhythmbox and click the box in the enabled column to check it. After that you can also optionally configure it.

I think you may have messed up the configuration when you were trying to find where to put the %rb in. My plugin configuration has in the box song format string:
%artist - '%title'
Try changing it to that and only put the %rb in the status message.

Pidgin has a Debug window under the help menu, try that and see what error you get when you pause and play songs.

I only get the rb_process_status errors when there is no %rb in the status message. Try clicking on the Available button, then new status message, then type
plays %rb

I don't know what g_log is... it's probably the name of the subroutine that logs errors. What version of pidgin pidgin-rhythmbox, rhytmbox and Fedora are you running? You can use rpm -qva |grep pidgin or rpm -qva |grep rhythm to find out.

I'm using Fedora 8
rhythmbox-0.11.3-11.fc8
pidgin-rhythmbox-2.0-1.fc7
pidgin-2.4.1-1.fc8

I am using the 32 bit version. Did you ever try that? Could be an x86_64 problem.

I tried it with Fedora 9 32 bit and it works (I don't have an x86_64 machine). Suggest you file a bug under fedora bugzilla on the 64 bit version.

pidgin-rhythmbox-2.0-3.fc9.i386
rhythmbox-0.11.5-12.fc9.i386
pidgin-2.4.1-2.fc9.i386

I get the same errors, and I'm using 32bit also.

pidgin-2.4.2-1.fc9.i386
pidgin-rhythmbox-2.0-3.fc9.i386
rhythmbox-0.11.5-13.fc9.i386

g_log: rb_process_status: assertion `old != NULL && strlen(old) != 0' failed
