What games work on wine...

I thought that somewhat older games would certainly work on linux...

but just now I was trying out The longest journey but when I tried to install it, a message poped up could not find ikernel.exe and the setup failed...

I felt that all types of setup files would run of sure, but here, even the setup failed..

any ideas...

and whats the deal with cedega? Isnt there an open source alternative better than wine and cedega?

cedega and wine are it... if you want to play the latest and greatest then you'll need to keep windows floating around... Jump on the bandwagon for linux ports of software where possible also.

What games are you trying to get working?

Escape from monkey island is supposed to run in wine:

Grim Fandango is broken in the later builds of Wine, apparently the new direct x functionality is breaking things. Another alternative is SCUMMVM which is an engine that is been written for Grim Fandango, not sure on how far they've progressed since last I looked at it...

I have an install of Wine, latest Cedega and I also have a copy of XP and 2K running through VirtualBox so that I can play my games without any issue. Best thing about using VirtualBox is that if I get bored I can delete the image and restore a backup copy then start fresh.

Other option is to wait until someone in a suit finally decides that they can port games to Linux.
