Unhappy Mouse moves in steps of 2 pixels?

At our department the PCs are being upgraded to Fedora Core 2. After my PC was upgraded and I started Gimp, I noticed that the mouse now moves in steps of at least 2 pixels. It is impossible to make the cursor move by a single pixel. If I draw a shape with the pencil, it looks totally jagged, unless I zoom to 2:1 but that's not quite practical.
I tried changing the mouse settings in the Gnome preferences but I can't get rid of the 2 pixel step size. It also happens in KDE so it must be some setting of the X server. Where can I change this behaviour?

If in gnome, try the gnome mouse settings. Play with some settings there and you might get things the way you like them.

The mouse settings is found in the menu, under preferences > Mouse.
To launch it from a terminal, do:
Code:
gnome-mouse-properties

I already tried that, but apparently not hard enough: when setting both the acceleration and sensitivity to minimum, the mouse is able to move in steps of 1 pixel. Of course this makes the cursor extremely sluggish. If I then move the 'Sensitivity' slider only 20 pixels away from the leftmost position, the two-pixel behaviour returns. The same counts for the 'Speed' slider (when setting it all the way to the right, the mouse moves in steps of at least 8 pixels!!!) So it's still impossible to get both an accurate and non-sluggish mouse... I can't remember ever having encountered this problem elsewhere.
