emacs apply "magic" tabs to whole file

you know the feature where you hit tab and it puts the text magically in the right spot? Well when you open a file that was not created in emacs and tabs are much bigger than usual, i have been going down and hitting tab on every line to set them up properly. Clearly this is ridiculous haha. How do you do this automatically?

Thanks,

Dave

i found it -
go to the beginning of the file (ctrl+homekey)

set a mark (ctrl+spacebar)

go to the end of the file (ctrl + endkey)

apply the indenting between the mark and cursor (ctrl+alt+backslash)

yay!
