Unhappy Fedora 9 Update Program Stalls

Fedora hasn't updated for a long time. It tries to but ends up filling my screen with "Waiting For Other Tasks to Complete" messages. I can see the 131 pending updates, but if I try to apply them that's when I have the problem. I have to reboot often or something crashes and takes me back to the login screen.

Any ideas?

first you might want to register
but in the mean time first try updating JUST your graphics card ( nvidia , ati )
Code:
su -
( your root pass)
yum clean all
yum makecache
-- then--
yum update ( your driver )
 -- ex. --
yum update kmod-nvidia
-- or --
 yum update kmod-fglrx
this will only update the driver and i'ts dependencies like the kernel and kernel-devel
reboot and retry
yum update

Try opening the terminal and typing:

Code:
su
(your root password)
yum update
I dont know if PackageKit will try to block Yum if it is running, I removed Packagespit first thing as it is junk. You may have to wait for it to stop running or turn it off before you can use Yum. If this works for you then I would suggest also running yum install yumex as this is a better front end for yum at this time.

BTW, you may have to run yum clean all before you can update from the terminal.

Thanks John and JN4.

I ran
yum clean all
yum makecache

I don't know what the driver name is for my card so I skipped that step. I ran yum update and kept getting dependency issues with compiz. I installed yumex. I uninstalled everything compiz related, rebooted and packagekit is in the middle of updating. No problems so far.

Actually, I did find one use for Package Updater: I can use it to find out what updates are out there, and if I'll need to log out and back in, or reboot after I'm done. However, whenever I tell it to update the system it tells me there's no connection even though it used one to get the list. Frankly, I don't understand why they included it as the default, or why they got rid of Pirut because their replacements are such a POS.
