Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Pleas

Hi,
I'm hoping someone has more ideas for me to try.
I'm on Fedora 8 and since the Fedora infrastructure thing happened I get:
yum --noplugins update
livna | 2.1 kB 00:00
livna-debuginfo | 1.9 kB 00:00
removing mirrorlist with no valid mirrors: //var/cache/yum/fedora/mirrorlist.txt
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again

I have tried running:
yum clean all
yum clean metadata
yum clean dbcache
yum --noplugins update
rpm -U --oldpackage --replacefiles fedora-release-8-5.noarch.rpm
rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm -vv --rebuilddb

and still can't update the system.
Here is my fedora.repos file
[fedora]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=fedora-8$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

[fedora-debuginfo]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch - Debug
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/debug/
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=fedora-debug-$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

[fedora-source]
name=Fedora $releasever - Source
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/source/SRPMS/
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=fedora-source-$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=0
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

I'm at a loss, help?! Please?!

Is this in fact exactly as it appears?
Code:
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=fedora-8$releasever&arch=$basearch
Should be:
Code:
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=fedora-$releasever&arch=$basearch
