Fedora 9 freezes (kernel lockup) frequently

The F9 system locks up frequently while using firefox or even the commandline
the screen freezes, can't use the mouse, keyboard, can't ctrl+alt+backspace or alt+ctrl+F? The system just stops
I'm using F9 x86_64 on AMD Athlon X2 5600+
2 gigs of memory

hmm
their problem is a little bit different
I've turned off cpu scaling (Cool n quiet), I'll see how that goes
but now the two cores run about 10 Celsius more
