eth0 detected but cannot bring up

HI guys!

I have just installed Fedora Core 5. (Sorry I didnt use the new version since I have the FC5 installer CDs)

here is my computer specification
CPU: AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz
RAM: 256MB (SDRAM)
HD: 40GB
Video Card: 32MB Palit
LAN Card: 3com 3c590/3c595/3c90x/3cx980 (as detected in the System -> Administration -> Network)

Here is my question.... When i type
Code:
ifconfig eth0
it says ifconfig: command not found

if i type
Code:
lsmod
it says ifconfig: command not found

here is my $PATH
Code:
/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr:/X11R6/bin:/home/user/bin
I check out /dev and eth0 wasnt present...

How come it was detected in the System -> Administration ->Network but not in the /dev?

Then, If I click activate button in the GUI Network Configuration here is the error message

Quote:
3c59x device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization
HOw am I gonna fix this? Do I need drivers for my LAN Card? Do I have to recompile the kernel?

Thanks
