FC8: Unable to access GUI after login

Hi.. I have a really weird problem... My system had a few improper shutdowns and ever since I have been having problems accessing the GUI Screen on my default session. I enter the username and password and the system after a loong time shows my desktop image and is like that for a very long time... then I get the icons on my desktop... I have problems getting the task bar on top (with the applications, system links) and the bottom task bar (with Desktops). Please help me regarding this problem. I am a beginner in Linux (as is probably obvious). My system is a Core2Duo with Intel Original Mother board with 2GB RAM.

Possibly (probably) your normal user's $HOME folder and/or desktop environment settings got hosed. You can check easily by creating a new user (if necessary) and logging in as that user - same problem? No? Then your normal user's config is borked. There are several places to look to remove those if needed....

Hi.... I get the same problem even when I login as root... so probably normal user's config is "borked".... any suggestion on how I can "unbork" it?

Much obliged.... thnx

If you get the same problem when logging into desktop as root user, then probably it's more than personal settings.

Suggest that you verify integrity of all desktop-related packages (GNOME I assume) - copy-and-paste this command and run:
rpm -V `rpm -qa|grep -i gnome`

Could take a while to churn through all the stuff - let it finish. Ignore any messages about "...one of dependencies changed since prelinking..."
You're looking for MISSING or damaged files, especially executables and libs. Altered config files are OK too, if you recognize them as ones that you've altered.

Attach output of above command to a post if you don't understand.

If that's all you got for output, that's really very good (no output is ideal, but numerous config file and such small changes are normal). So, all of the RPM packages named *\gnome\* are OK.

Well, something else must be wrong. Two suggestions:
> Easier one is:
yum install yum-utils
package-cleanup --dupes
package-cleanup --problems

> Time-consuming but thorough:
rpm -Va
will verify ALL installed RPM packages for integrity.

I can think of no easier way(s) to pin-point the problem, since it seems clear to me that some important software has become damaged. Not just any one user's personal settings.

Um... what's that repo: sipxecs? Never heard of it.

As far as the output: nothing stands out as obvious. The "...prelink..." stuff is garbage. Much of the rest might disappear if the command is run as root user. But the MISSING files all seem to be related to that sipxecs, whatever it is. Need to know more about it - it could be the cause of the problem, since some files (including one system library) are missing....

Try:
[root@localhost]# yum install yum-utils --disablerepo=sipxecs\*
Assuming the install completes without errors, then (as root) try:
package-cleanup --dupes
package-cleanup --problems

Hi I removed the SipXecs repository and the system seems to be fine now.. I was able to install yum-utils and run the check, this is what I got...:
