How to make network scanner visible to Fedora?
Hi all.
I have an all-in-one printer/scanner that is connected wirelessly to the local network, and I am able to print to it using CUPS, no problem.
Now I also want to access the scanner part of this all-in-one over the network. I have read a lot about sane and saned, but it seems eg. /etc/sane.d/net.conf is only for sharing a locally attached scanner on the local net, not to access a networked scanner.
So, where should I look? Is it even possible to do this? It would be great with a system-config-scanner tool...
btw, I have successfully used the scanner when connected via USB.
Any hints appreciated.

If your scanner is Brother (as it is mine), you may find this post useful:

Hope it helps.

Thanks, but unfortunately my all-in-one is a Canon PIXMA MP600R. I have installed some drivers (cnijfilter-common-2.70-1.i386.rpm scangearmp-common-1.00-2.i386.rpm
cnijfilter-mp600-2.70-2.i386.rpm scangearmp-mp600-1.00-1.i386.rpm) that I found on the australian canon site, which includes some tools (ie. "scangearmp"), I could not find any info on scanning over the network.
But the drivers for the scanner is working, since it is working using USB, so all I need is something for sane to recognize the IP address as a scanner. Can it be done?

Not sure about this, but if you installed the correct rpms, is possible Canon provides some info as to how to manually configure the scan connection via the network. In Brothers case, I was provided with instructions using the root account. First, I needed to find out the scanner's ip address and then issue a command based on said ip address to configure the connection. Hope this helps and good luck again.

Yes, there is some info in a file guidemp600-sg-1.00-1.tar.gz, but no mention of network scanning. And the program provided by the rpms gives no clue:
# scangearmp -h
scangearmp is a GIMP plug-in and must be run by GIMP to be used
Cannot find Canon MFP scanner device.
# man scangearmp
No manual entry for scangearmp
If try to use Gimp (ver 2.6), "File->Create...->ScanGear MP..." gives nothing, probably because no scanner is found. No config dialog.
I know the IP of the scanner, and it responds to ping, naturally, as I also use it for printing.
Is it so that saned is not able to "transport" anything from the scanner based on the IP so that the local driver can recognize it?
Thanks

Hm, just found this page:
http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/...&bus=any&v=&p=
and it seems it is not even possible to search for "Bus-type" "network", so sane is probably not able to do much with this scanner. Too bad.
