No system sounds after opening Skype

I'm running Fedora 9 kernel 2.6.25.14-108 on a Dell XPS M1330.

My sound device is SigmaTel STAC9228 and I have the ALSA audio mixer and PulseAudio volume control installed

I am using Skype 2.0.0.72. Receiving and sending sound during a call works fine when using Skype, however all system sounds (system 'click', playback audio in firefox when streaming videos etc.) seem to be muted when the program is open, including those associated with Skype (call ringing, new message 'click')

Has anyone come across this ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks !
