hello
I did a clean install of F12
and did all 4 steps
now when i try to boot i get a black screen most of the time,
but sometimes I am able to start X. It's all good until after a couple of minutes of
stability the computer freezes completely including the keyboard.

Here are some of the logs from the last boot:

Xorg.0.log: http://pastebin.com/pastebin.php?dl=m4cdf1b0f

And output from /var/log/messages:

Hey there, looks like its broken for rawhide:
Code:

Little typo? :-)

Edit: Forget it, my bad.

Card not supported?

I upgraded from Fedora 11 to Fedora 12 using preupgrade, and have since spent two and a half hours trying to get my screen to display something.

Nouveau apparently completely rejects my 8600 GTS, because I had to remove it to see anything beyond the grub screen, but after pulling it out, setting the xorg.conf to Vesa, putting it back in, starting over once more, and following your guide, I'm... still... stuck using Vesa.

Whenever I try to boot using the nvidia driver (using the automatic nvidia-xconfig utility), after the typical loading bar and wait, I'm greeted with a screen flickering for around 15 seconds, as if it's trying to load the gdm, but then it just gives up and shows an empty black screen with a cursor slowly blinking on it. So I'm forced to remove my xorg.conf to return the video card driver to vesa (it's so much easier than using nano) and sit frustrated as my blood pressure rises to dangerously high levels. Another strange part to the story is that whenever I log in using the vesa driver, I have to manually start metacity. I have no idea where that problem stems from.

Here are some dmesg messages I think might be related to the problem:

Code:
[Lee@localhost ~]$ dmesg | grep NVRM
NVRM: The NVIDIA GPU 01:00.0 (PCI ID: 10de:0400) installed
NVRM: in this system is not supported by the 190.53 NVIDIA Linux
NVRM: graphics driver release. Please see 'Appendix A -
NVRM: Supported NVIDIA GPU Products' in this release's README,
NVRM: available on the Linux graphics driver download page at
NVRM: www.nvidia.com.
NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine failed for 1 device(s).
NVRM: None of the NVIDIA graphics adapters were initialized!
And here's some additional information about my system:
Code:
[Lee@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep nvidia
kmod-nvidia-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64-190.53-1.fc12.x86_64
nvidia-settings-1.0-3.2.fc12.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-190.53-1.fc12.x86_64
kmod-nvidia-2.6.30.10-105.fc11.x86_64-190.42-1.fc11.4.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-190.53-1.fc12.x86_64
nvidia-xconfig-1.0-1.fc12.x86_64
akmod-nvidia-190.53-1.fc12.x86_64
[Lee@localhost ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600 GTS (rev a1)
(My current rpms are from rpmfusion's testing repos, but the same problem happened with the normal ones too.)

Did you blacklist Nouveau as per Leigh's instructions in post #1 ? There's also a SELinux switch to toggle IIRC.

I did blacklist nouveau and remove it using yum. The output of rpm -qa nouveau is blank (I'm posting this from my laptop, otherwise I would post the code)

Okay... the updater the last week or two has been nagging me about a bunch of xorg updates including a new noveau driver.

Has anyone using the nvidia drivers here with noveau blacklisted/removed tried installing these updates? What does one have to do to ensure they do not install noveau all over again and remove or damage the install of the nvidia drivers? Or is it a non-problem as long as you do not permit the noveau package to install with the other xorg packages?

Thanks.

Once it's blacklisted it won't come back unless you un-blacklist in grub.conf.

Leigh thanks a lot for your guide.

Freshly install F12 64bits, yum update, restart, followed your guide, restart again and
glxgear went from ~170 to 5000+ for my GT220.
No one single glitch even if I'd love to get back F12 startup anymation to display instead of the old progressive bar.

(off topic) still playing with xorg.conf because the native EDID-supplied mode results with all for edges of the screen cut off and wrong EDID DPI settings where also supplied by my HDTV.

Thanks!
