FC10 Nvidia 9200M Screen brightness does not change

I have a Samsung X460 with an Nvidia 9200M video card, I have successfully installed the Nvidia drivers and now the screen brightness will not change always full, either manually or when switching to batter), the on screen brightness indicator comes up showing lower level when switching to battery, but brightness of screen does not change. Any thoughts?

thanks Ike

I have exactly the same problem on HP 8710w, NVIDIA fx3600m: can't change screen brightness using hotkeys Fn+F9/F10. They do work without nvidia drivers installed though.

NVIDIA hasn't come up with a solution for mac brightness for many years. Welcome to closed source computing!

Re: FC10 Nvidia 9200M Screen brightness does not change

When you install nvidia it tries to disable nouveau (the open source driver). nouveau doesn’t need xorg.conf files but nvidia does create one. So initially I had gotten rid of nvidia by deleting this xorg.conf file and removing all nvidia drivers.

After installing it again I tried this….when nvidia puts up rdblacklist=nouveau in the grub.conf file – Remove all those additions. Just put nouveau.modset=1 instead of 0. The 0 is put by nvidia installer which is a problem.

This time your old brightness files path seem to work.

/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/mbp_backlight/brightness

Again there is a catch coz it doesn’t work in your GUI console. Surprisingly if you go to your non gui console. Ctrl Alt Fn F1 – then login as root. This time if you change the file

echo 2 > /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/mbp_backlight/brightness

Animeshsaxena, rather than digging up old threads (check the dates) and posting possible fixes on each one, why not put the same info into a Guide & Solution post, so that others can find it??

These old threads need to be CLOSED. (done)
