Fedora 10 - New Install no x server

Hi All

I have just done a new install using Fedora 10 DVD x86_64. The installation was done in text mode as no graphical user interface was provided. After Installation I still have no x server or any graphical environment. I am prompted to login at the console no tty7.

Everything worked fine in F 9 i just need a clean system, so did this with a new install. My Hardware is as follows Acer Aspire 5520, AMD 64x2 Turion, Geforce 7000M.

Guys please help get me a working F 10.

Thanks David

I had the same issue. Look at the last line in /etc/inittab. The default runlevel is probably 3. It should be 5. You probably also have no ordinary user account since the text version of firstboot doesn't prompt you to create one. You can log into X as root and to go System/Administration/Users and Groups to create one, or find out how to do it on the command line. I don't remember the command for this.

Edit: The command is "useradd". Make sure to create a home directory for the user. If you're not sure what you're doing, do it graphically as above. Just don't stay logged into X as root longer than you have to.

useradd automatically creates a home directory.

create the: jdoe
useradd jdoe
set the password for the new user: jdoe
passwd jdoe

There's a -c option to create a comment. The man page says that's currently used to indicate the user's full name, which the graphical version asks for. I.e,

useradd -c "John Doe" jdoe

Of course, this can probably be modified later, so it's not critical.

Thanks for your reply it fixed my problem. Do you know why it is set like this is it a mistake I made during installation or just that fedora can't detect my graphics during install properly.

Thanks for the useradd command, just surely now my user is minus the default groups.

It happened because you chose to do a text-based install - the same thing happened to me. I suppose the assumption is that if one does a text-based install, it's because there is an issue with X. Of course, it could also just be because there isn't enough memory for a graphical install. In any case, it should be documented. Also, there's no reason why the text-based firstboot couldn't set up an ordinary user account.
