USB to Serial Adapter

I have a USB to serial adapter that I would like to use with Putty so that I can console into my router.

When I plug the device in ttyUSB0 is created in /dev however when I try to use it in putty it complains that it is unable to open the serial connection.

I have not installed any drivers, and I am very new to LInux can anyone help please ?

Thanks

NB
