Black screen after Fedora 10 bootup
I have a Mobility Radeon X1600 on a i686 (centrino dual core) laptop. I noticed that I could not change my resolution, and so I installed the appropriate driver from ATI. I know that in Ubuntu, it loads the proprietary driver for ATI, but I was pretty sure mine were not installed since I could not chagne from the default 600x800.
Grub would load, and then Fedora would boot into graphical mode with the loading bar which would load 100%. From then, I just get a black screen.
I booted into run level 3 and typed
which says: can't open display
Code:
sudo aticonfig --intial
also gives me: error while loading shared libraries.....cannot restore segment after reloc: permission denied
Does anybody know how I can once again use my Fedora partition? I am stuck using windows and I'm pissed.
on a side note, is there a graphical program that I can use to edit Grub? Thanks

Mine did that a couple of times. I never found out the problem, but I did notice that it was because of my mouse. I have a usb mouse(cordless) with keyboard. I found that even when I was able to get f10 running, when ever I used the scroll wheel on the mouse, the computer froze up. I went back to f9.
My guess is that problem is in memory. I don't think that 750 mb is enough, so I ordered 4 gb to try that out. If you find out the problem, let me know.
Also, I couldn't get Realplayer to work with f10. Oh yea, I am running a 64 bit. Haven't tried the 32 bit f10 yet. I am now on f9 32 bit, so everything works.l

I don't think the mouse is causing this..but somewhere in the xorg file. I don't plan on downgrading, which is why I switched from Ubuntu.
Somehow the installation of my ati drivers started this. I guess I should have stayed in that default resolution.

I went back and re-read your post.
Ok, 1st, to change your screen, you have to turn off the mirror check box on the top of the pop up. I don't understand why that resolution is the default, but it is.
There is two ways to get into a gui mode to change the grub loader. Both will require you to place the cd or dvd of f10 into the computer and reboot to rescue mode. Once you are in f10, the line command is startx or init 5. Init 5 may take you back to the black screen, so I would probably try the startx 1st. That will give you the gui grome by default.
The second way is to use the gedit command from the command line. It should read: #gedit /boot/grub/grub.conf
That's the best I can do. Good luck!

i'm having exactly the same problem!
I am running FC10 on a Dell 6400 with ATI X1400 graphics. Everything was running perfectly but I could not get the TV-Out (S-Video) to work. I had a look on the ATI site and it said to install the drivers from their site for tv-out support.
I did this and since then I get a blank screen on boot. Goes through the whole loading process fine.
I'm not 100% sure how to actually fix this, but i take it i jus tneed to boot from the rescue cd and do a startx. But if I do get back in what do I do then?
cheers

seems that a lot of other people are running into this problem when they install ATI drivers directly from their website and not actually doing this
I think the solution would be to boot into run level 3 and then reinstall using the revised Fedora method. I will test this out and post back..or else it is off to trying another distro that doesn't leave u in the dark

I'm not saying that not re-installing fedora is the best thing to do. I would think that if you get to level 3, you might just change the video driver to default. I had the same problem when fedora 4 came out, and the ATI drivers weren't available. I can't remember the file name where I changed the video driver, but someone out there will be able to tell you that. If you try to rescue, it will not change your video driver, so I don't think that will help. You may have to re-install, but I wouldn't jump into that unless you have nothing on f10 yet. If all you have is a fresh install, a re-install will send you back to the default video driver.
If you do a startx, you will load the same video driver, so you should have a black screen. Init 5 will load the video driver, the only difference is that it takes you to the log in screen.

I did a reinstall of FC10 and followed the ATI driver install (from here http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=155503) to the letter and it did not work either. All I get with that is a nice boot up screen then a flashing screen with a line of text a thte top, seems to be stuck in an infinate loop of some sort.
Unfortunatly it seems that linux is still linux underneath all the eye candy. So it's back to XP until the next release.

I don't know if going back to XP is the best thing to do.
Why don't you do as I did, and just go back to f9. Fedora 9 is working the way it should be. You can use RealPlayer for all the Window Media files and Flashplayer works also.
Fedora 10 will start working as soon as they get the bugs worked out. Oh yea, that is the f9 32 bit version, by the way.
Good luck with your decision.

I'm using ATI video right now, and it seems to be working for me. When I tried to use f10 64 bit, my computer would freeze up every time I used my mouse at a fast pace. Normally with the scroll wheel, or while using the slide bar on the right side. This may be because of the ATI video, but as soon as that started, I went back to f9 32 bit where I knew that everything worked.
I don't need to fix f10, the people who are working on it right now knows more about it than I do. I'll wait a couple of months and upgrade again. By then, they may have everything working.
I just heard they have the flashplayer working, maybe they will have realplayer working in a couple of months, We are not the only people using ATI, they will fix the problem if you give them time.

Black screen after Fedora 10 boot up
When I tried to install Fedora 10 on my laptop EasyNote MH35 I was unable to get it going at first. But soon I realized that I had to give the following parameters to the kernel. As soon as the splash screen showed up I hit the "tab" button and gave the following instruction to the kernel: Linux noapic acpi=off and the installation program started. But very soon my monitor could not be recognised by the program and the installation continued in text mode. All very well but when restarting to finalize the installation I ended up with a black screen. To cut a long story short I restarted the installation with the extra parameters: skipddc xdriver=vesa and after finalizing the installation - still in 800 x 600 mode - I installed the program "system-config-dispay" by using "yum". Made the right alterations and I was in business.
I have been given to understand that system-config-display has been taken from the project due to the fact that all hardware would be detected. But various laptops ran into trouble. Hope this explanation may be helpful to some of my computer friends.

Curious that with this issue going on they would already have beta of Fedora 11 out?
I too have this issue. I have tried installing Fedora 10 3 times now and each time I update the Driver for my Lappie's ATIX1250 video, I reboot and get the Black screen of death. I tried helden's suggestion and it did not work for me.

Have you tried appending in the grub configuration ( /boot/grub/grub.conf) in the line where it says kernel /boot/vmlinuz...?
There is some fine-grained timer problem in HP dv6000 series that I forget where I got the information from, but that fixed the freezing problem when moving the mouse. You may also want to try in the grub configuration and choose one that shows console text properly (make sure to remove 'rhgb quiet'.)
For ATI graphics, I use rpmfusion repository rather than manually installing directly from downloaded file at ATI site. It works 100%. I see that their latest ati fglrx update is dated 1/31/2009, so you may want to try that.
I am very happy with Fedora 10 64-bit, and the only thing missing is 64-bit Adobe Acrobat Reader, but that is solved using evince. 64-bit Flash player, java 64-bit plugin, all now available.
