Notebook power profile?

In windows I can set up my OS to understand that when I close the lid of my notebook, it sleeps and other power saving modes for notebooks.

Is there something simular I can do to Fedora Core 2 to make it understand that I am using a notebook and to sleep when I close the lid and to turn hard disk off after so long of idle and other save mode features?

This stuff is all handled by ACPI but I don't think it's fully implimented in linux. ACPI only officially appeared in late 2.4 series kernels (2.4.24??) and before that it was experimental. It's still a bit hit and miss. Power saving on processor and fan speed control work OK, but as to the rest?

Are you saying that it does not support Linux that well

Yep - that's it.

You can check it's turned on in Services. Either use ACPI or APM, but not both at the same time. ACPI is more advanced, but you'll just have to experiment to see what features are implemented and don't be surprised if more advanced features like suspend/sleep on lid close don't work properly.

Only a year or two ago, this required patching the kernel and a complete kernel recompile!

I still need to find a LAN to plug into - all I have done so far is install FC2 from Disk and have done no YUM or UP2date for the OS. Everything is still unpatched
