GDM is wrong resolution

When I plug my desktop monitor into my laptop gdm does display correctly but the desktop works great and it detects the monitor just fine.

But when I go to gdm it displays all crooked and blurring like it is the wrong resolution.

is there a way to tell gdm to display at a certain frequency and/or resolution.

don't really need any fancy just 800x600 would work or 640x480 just as long as it is readable

if it is any consolidation the latest version of ubuntu does the same thing so and both hardy and fedora 9 worked perfectly gdm displayed correctly

so I am guessing something changed with x and the way it handles gdm.

thanks in advance.

yeah, unfortunately the gdm in F10 and F9 doesn't seem to allow custom flags to be supplied to Xorg, in F8 you used to have gdmsetup and you could add settings for the server to start with a particular resolution or dpi in the security settings tab. You are supposed to be able to add custom server settings in /etc/gdm/custom.conf but it just doesn't work. I worked out a way to hack it for the dpi setting (this is needed to fix the font size on netbooks), if anyone knows a "proper" method then please post
