Gnome Notification hide

something that sucks about linux is the fact that I can't hide the icons in theNotification area like on Windows Vista. I have a small screen and I'd like to only see them when I need them. I know I can just remove the notification area from my bar, but I'd like something more on demand.

If you right click on the panel, top or bottom and select properties, you can add end arrows that allow you to scroll them to one end or the other.

Thanks, but that's not what I'm looking for I just want to hide the notification icons like Vista, where icons that have a notification or are doing something show up, and the rest are hidden. but If I want to see them all, i just have to click the arrow to see them all.
