Trouble changing keyboard layout

Hello there!

I'm here to ask you guys a question (that I know that may seem stupid...):

I have installed Fedora 8 in my PC, and as usual, i've set all the OS in english, including the keyboard layout.

I could change with no further issues the layout to the portuguese (ELIMINATE DEAD KEYS) in the GNOME interface... but as soon as I switch to the "command line blackscreen", the keys stand still in the previous layout set in the instalation...

I tried as well to switch the keyboard in the command line itself, through this coomand:

system-config-keyboard

And it was already set to Portuguese, and nothing changed so far.

Can you guys help me out on this?

Best wishes!!!

use loadkeys to change keyboard map in the console, eg to change to portuguese keyboard type

Code:
su -c 'loadkeys pt'
possible keymaps are in /lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/

To make the change permanent set it in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard (use system-config-keyboard to make the change)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've opened /etc/sysconfig/keyboard for edition, and this is the content:

KEYBOARDTYPE="pc"
KEYTABLE="pt-latin1"

But the keyboard still the same... at GNOME, it's perfectly cofigured.
Is this a system bug or something?
What should I do?

Thank you very much for you support and atention.

^^

I guess that the ELIMINATE DEAD KEYS is not being activated in the "blackscreen" mode...

I can hit the 'ccedilla' normally... but the slash, backslash, pipe (this one is really "gone" of my keyboard), colon, and other very important keys are misplaced...

May I reinstall Fedora, or can it be fixed?

Standing by an answer.

Thank you very much for your support.

F8's pretty old now, In F10 if I type 'loadkeys pt' (as root) backslash and pipe are where they are supposed to be (on the key to the left of 1), slash is on shift 7, isn't that correct? If I set portugal from system-config-keyboard then /etc/sysconfig/keyboard has the following entries

Code:
KEYBOARDTYPE="pc"
KEYTABLE="pt-latin1"
LAYOUT="pt"
MODEL="pc105"
OPTIONS=""
VARIANT=""
The console doesn't support utf-8 charset used by gnome-terminal, so don't expect all characters to display correctly (by dead keys I assume you mean the ones that apply accenting)

I will reinstall FC8 and set the keyboard layout throughout.

Thank you for the tips!
