fc10 vs fc7 for dialup & pre-built modules?

Hello Fedora Community My adventure begins Christmas 2008 with one of my neices giving me an ISO of Unbuntu which I gave a go. Results were a boot looping PC and being told that I needed the Alternate DVD. Started the surf and search and opted for the Fedora as a newbee friendly. Bought the book Beginning Fedora that came with the fc7 disk and so began the learning which lead to buying the fc10 DVD. But reading the following post sent me back to fc7 because I have dialup.

"And now, Fedora 10 has made it so that after spending most of a day, I still can’t download from a repository. Permissive mode will still allow Firefox to use dialup to get on the internet, but yum has apparently entirely cut it off. Fedora now requires a login as root to access repositories, and won’t “authenticate” a login from the desktop. I can no longer open a terminal window and access the repositories using su or sudo. Even if I comment out a line in the pamd config file that will allow me to login as root from the GUI, I still can’t access the repositories because dialup is not recognized as an internet connection.

And dialup has become even harder to install at all. My modem has not been automatically recognized for years, but I was able to configure a generic fairly quickly. Now two more settings must be configured compared to F9, and a box must be checked after the configuration. It took me an hour just to figure out that an installed modem connection needed to be marked as intended for use."

So based on this post can I use fc10 with dialup and have yum work for me.

After much reading, searching, and trialing with fc7 I am at another install where I checked the office and devel for the install and now seem to have my headers and gcc to enable installing the source for my winmodem to set up dialup but its not happening. I get:

"No pre-built modules for: Fedora-7 linux-2.6.21-1.3194.fc7 i686-SMP from your distribution vendor and/or the community are installed."

Are there certain RPMs from the DVD that I still need to install to get things working to have my modem install.

So Hello again and any enlightenment/help will be greatly appreciated.
