F10: Network Connection not stable (wired and wireless)

Hi all,

I've installed F10 on my laptop since few days and I'm facing an annoying networking issue: the network connection seems to work well when, suddently, it goes down for a while, and then come back.

This happens with both wired and wireless (Intel PRO/ Wireless 3945ABG) connection.

Did someone face the same problem?
Is there a solution?

Thanks a lot, cheers

mm

Not had any problems like you have described, I would tend to think it may be a router problem. How are you setting the IP address dhcp or static on the F10? If you are using static have you set that up in the router?

IP address is assigned by the router using DHCP (with address reservation based on the MAC address). There's no static IP address assignment in the LAN.

Anyway, I used the router also with another workstation and I never faced this issue (the router is a Netgear DG834).

Snap on the netgear.
Have you checked that you have given the IP address of the router as the gateway address on the F10? But I suppose need to work out what you are having problems with is it the internet or are you setting up a home network with samba?

Apparently you were right, it seems to be a router issue.
I set the router so that it uses the DNS of opendns instead of obtaining it from my ISP.

It seems working fine now.

Thanks for your help

Hi Mottam

Glad you got it sorted.

Sounds like a dynamic IP address problem somewhere in the Netgear set up for your ISP. Seems strange that only the Fedora box was hit though. I always manually edit the system>admin>DNS entry and give my router as the primary DNS for the cards. i.e 192.168.0.1. Just let the Netgear sort it out from there on. It could be that the Fedora is trying to directly access an IP address that has been dynamically changed by your ISP.

Anyway glad you got there:-)

This is what I didn't understand too. I had in /etc/resolv.conf the netgear's lan address (192.168.0.1) and in the netgear settings for DNS I had "retrieve them dynamically from ISP".

Now I've just changed the DNS settings on netgear console writing the opendns ones.
This is a router setting, not a fedora one.
It's also true that from my other laptop (running Mac OS X) I never had this issue... I actually missed something...
