unable to login as root

Hello...i got a weird problem..i need to login as a root(not from the terminal).So i entered username: root
and passwd: my root passwd but this is the message "unable to authenticate user"..am i doing any mistake? it works prettywell when i enter su and root passwd through console...please tell me how to resolve........thanks

There is no graphical root login in F10 !
