I've used F10 on the AAO SSD version and for the most part has done everything I wanted straight out of the box.

I would strongly recommend the steps about switching to ext2 from ext3 and overall speed won't be great if you are running with 512mb of ram+swap (I'm entering the daunting task of upgrading the RAM this week).
Oh, and you could always try the XFCE gnome option if you are too timid to upgrade your ram
If you get on well I'd also try the F11 distro when it's finished as I'm guessing it'll have the same great out-of-the-box functionality I got from F10 - plus a few tweaks for speed.
