Just found this: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopi...0510d19b7d57b8 For all those Mint lovers out there, you might get to the download sites a bit quicker than the Distrowatch crowd.

I believe that was the RC that was out previously. This is the actual one.

I have been poking about trying to decide if I should download Mint7 or not:
Positives:
-it does not use PackageKit
-it seems like I might get accel. vid on my ATI 9600 (for GoogleEarth)
-easy codec installs
Negatives:
-needs a kernel update right off the mark (something about a bug in the kernel?)
-ipv6 stuff is default (means the kernel update is needed, to disable ipv6)
-uses PulseAudio (PA does not work well with my ham radio programs)
-has some problems with some wireless security protocols (inherited from Ubuntu)
So, I guess I will wait a few days and read the fallout.
Regards,
Bob

Well, D/L'd Live CD, first boot try hung computer just before login screen with external monitor attached. Unplugged ext. mon. and tried again. This time booted, and ran. Plugged in ext. mon. hot (yeah, I know better LOL)..Fiddled around with setting Screen Resolution. Seemed to work, so shut down and restarted again, with ext. mon. This time it finished booting and ran. Go figure? Anyways, to report:
-did software update...successful (this never worked with any Fedora Live CD)
-Atheros wireless worked right off (external on/of wifi switch does not work..like in F10..is always on)
-PulseAudio glitched gmsk31, same as in F10
-audio volumes were normal (no problems with being too low)
-switching between laptop display and external monitor was seamless
-could not check if ATI prop. drivers would work, since it would need a reboot or hd install..not ready to trash F10 yet.
-FF did not seem to have slowed down much with the ipv6 default.
This on a Toshiba Sat. laptop .. I always forget the model...it is either p100 or p30...i686 3.7 gHz, 2 gig ram. ATI 9600 vid, Atheros wifi.
I had problems with the menu system (still), but I imagine I could get used to it. Maybe when we go to town for groceries tomorrow, I will see if I can find another 2 1/2 in ata100 hard drive. I need another one anyway, as the original toshiba drive is hatched.
Best regards,
Bob
ps...I just realized that I did not check if it updated the kernel or not. Too late now. I'm back in F10.

Demz,
I did not see that error, neither in Mint 7 on the Toshiba laptop, neither in Mint 5 or 6 in an HP amd 64 laptop, an amd sempron desktop, or in a laptop with in intel chipset. That said, I have noticed it has been an historical problem in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Mint, and Fedora. You might have to turn it off in the bios. I seem to recall that problem can make your cpu get hot real fast...something about fans and cooling.
Regards,
Bob

i did a google search on the Error an saw it mentioned http://www.google.com.au/search?q=MP...ient=firefox-a it affects me, not that i cant work around it by using the noapic solution apart from that the Menu system took me a bit to get used to but once you get to know how to use it should be easy. i have plenty of Fans an good ones in my System so it stays cool pretty good

Interesting link, though I haven't come across the problem before.
So, some manufacturers make their BIOS Microsoft-only? Isn't that illegal (in the anti-competitive/anti-trust sense)?

I've installed it on a partition and have configured it properly now. It's not as 'brain-dead-simple' as some past versions, since I had to set up my Nvidia card and GLX before games would work, however most things were fine.
You know, in the past I've steered the new user to Mint rather than deal with the initial Fedora setup of those non-free codecs, however I think that a standard Fedora install, followed by Dangermouse's AutoTen could actually be an easier option.

Blasphemy!!!
What do you mean "set up" your card? Your hardware wasnt just autodetected and you werent asked to just click the switch?
I found many bugs in the Mint 6 Gnome release but this one is really smooth. I even have Xfce 4.6 installed and have not experienced any problems at all. Of course one man's treasure...
Oh, BTW, if you havent caught it by now check my above post, I was saying that facetiously. Like y'all are running F11 already...
@ the other Bob, I dont much care for the mintmenu either, though my kids like it. It is easy enough to remove it and just add either mainmenu or the traditional gnome menu to the panel. You may have to change the icon back to mint (if you want) bit that is in /usr/share/icons/linuxmint.

Nope, I wasn't. No interaction on the card at all. Now, that might have been just a glitch, since Ubuntu sure did that and they're closely related.
And Sean, yeah, I'm a little slow on the ol' switch these days. Got to warn me when you're tongue-in-cheek. Also when I've fallen asleep in the gruel again....

Bob, did you go through the "hardware drivers" app? Is it possible this just did not start for you for some reason? When I install I close auto update and hardware drivers first thing then uncheck them in the autostart list. Then I will manually install my nvidia driver from the hardware drivers app. What I am getting at is if this did not autostart then you would have to know to install the nvidia driver there.
At any rate, you should post your experience in the mint forum. I do not see a Mint 7 final bug thread but you could just post it as a separate thread. You are an experienced user and this is definitely a problem they should be aware of even if it is a one off.
edit: BTW, it is such a small thing but guess what happens when I hit ctrl-alt-backspace in Mint?
